As a current resident of DC, this absolutely made my heart sing! Thank you for highlighting this wonderful gem of a city. It's relatively small but there is SO MUCH TO DO! To add to the list: Capitol Hill Books, a charmingly packed bookstore in an old townhouse. It provides the calmest, most enchanting energy I've ever felt in a bookstore. Also, a legit French bakery just opened up a few doors down (Boulangerie Saint Georges) that has incredible pastries and a very friendly French owner. It's his first shop in the U.S.!
you left the most charming inn that DC has to offer, not to mention a great place for a drink/dinner/breakfast in good weather outside on their porch: The Tabard Inn!
I’m loving (and chuckling) that the Embassy Suites convention center made the list. I always recommend it to my friends and family with kids, especially if planning some typical sight seeing. If you’re coming with littles, it’s a good find, if not the coolest area of town. All suites rooms, recently renovated, central, closeish enough to the National Mall to walk (if you walk straight down 10th towards the Mall you’ll pass fords theatre!) + also close to metro lines, free breakfast if you want it (but also close to Pearls Bagels and east coast chain Tatte if you want something else). It really can serve as a good home base.
I lived in DC for 12 years but left in 2021 and it’s insane that almost all of your food and drink recs are unfamiliar to me!! Excited to check them out my next visit 🫶
thank you for this list!!! i'm planning a visit to D.C. for the first time post-pandemic and it's been so hard to find recommendations beyond the most popular tourist destinations.
Fellow DC resident here. Lovely to see some of my favorite spots included - Keren, Tregaron Conservancy, the MLK Jr. Library (they also have amazing book talks, music and cultural programming, workshops, etc.), Sankofa and Lost City Books. Some of my other faves: Anju (modern Korean), Cielo Rojo (great Mexican in nearby Takoma Park), St Vincent Wine Bar, walking around the Union Market area, sitting at the Georgetown waterfront on a nice summer night (preferably after a show at Blues Alley) and so much more. And let’s not even get into all the amazing festivals and events that go on around town. It’s been a rough year++ for our city, but it’s still a wonderful place!
Yesss I love Secondi! And the National Museum of Asian Art! We went there the other weekend, I didn’t realize they also have original pieces from Hokusai either. The cafe in the museum is kind of packed but we walked around the corner to 54 Restaurant, incredible vietnamese food and really cute inside. Highly recommend if you need a meal post museum!
