This is awesome. I haven't bought more than a handful of new clothing items in years; I'm 30w pregnant and looking forward to slowly overhauling my old wardrobe later this summer! This column will be the perfect slow drip of style content to keep me inspired.
Hello! Ha - so I was heavily pregnant (and swollen) in the summer, so I truly lived in H&M maternity bike shorts, tank top, a linen shirt, and Birkenstocks. Nothing very stylish or aspirational. Buying non-maternity sundresses and shirts one size above my normal size was also a good hack. I wore a midi white linen dress from Velvet quite a lot with sandals.
As for casual/athleisure wear - I'm convinced Beyond Yoga makes the best maternity leggings. I wore them quite a lot.
Loved this post & honestly I loved the try on pix - so fun and I was laughing at the sweater doing double duty as a clutch 😂 totally agree at shopping IRL can make making decisions SO much easier because anything can be styled to look good online, but in-person issues with quality, cut, color etc become so overtly apparent! More of these posts plssss such a fun read and now I’m off to browse J.Crew!
I’ve been moving away from online shopping for this exact reason of wanting to understand quality, fit etc in person whenever possible! so fun to see the try ons — adding a J. Crew visit to my next free evening x
I'm mid-size/plus-size (about a petite XL on top and 18ish on bottom) and have a lot of trouble shopping for anything other than tops and shoes in person because of in-store sizing not being inclusive (whereas there are usually a few larger sizes online). I truly wish this were more of an option for me for things like dresses (where the shoulders fit weird half the time on me - 5'2" and short torso - and I return a lot of them!) or pants. Shout-out to, of all places, Abercrombie(?!) for having sizes up to 20-22 or so in jeans available in stores though!
I shop in person for things such as shoes or occasion dresses, and lingerie. I buy pretty much everything else online. I do think that has led me to consuming more so I have been trying to slow down. The best advice I ever got is the importance of getting clothes tailored. Life changing!
yesss such a huge game changer! i work in film and tv, and everything is tailored, often even if you have just one line (depending on the timeline of your fitting to shooting). that’s why everyone looks so good. very rarely is anyone wearing anything off the rack.
This was an illuminating column! In the last two years, I’ve been practicing slow fashion and only if I need to replace an item or if I find something I really like, I will purchase it. If I do need to go clothes shopping through, I think going in person is a great way to practice mindfulness of what will go into my closet!
I am guilty of being dazzled by something right in front of me and forgetting I own something just like it. Then I get home and I have two of the "same" thing.
Always a good reminder to ask yourself if you have something similar waiting for you at home...
Yes they should have all bottoms in petite. The ones I’m wearing in the pics are all Regular length. I prefer the linen pant a bit longer so I went with my smaller size, Regular length.
Okay I am totally buying that pink striped shirt to wear to the pool!

Would love to see maternity clothes you liked Alisha!

I'm also a short girly (5'1) and have a similar build than you, so this helps a ton!
Alisha you were so right buying that pink striped button down. It looks amazing on you. You could wear more brights :)
Loved this new fashion email and loved seeing the J Crew items on a real person! PLEASE- more of this!!
Loved seeing these pieces on you!

Tailoring is so key! I always factor in the cost of tailoring when buying items
Thanks for bringing us along!

Do any of the bottoms come in petite (don’t feel like checking right now)?
